Short Bio
Hi, I am Sam (that’s how friends and acquaintances call me!), I am a postdoctoral researcher at the Artificial Intelligence and Robotics Lab (AIRLab), part of the Department of Electronics, Information, and Bioengineering of Politecnico di Milano.
I earned a Master’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Milan, graduating summa cum laude, before getting a second-level Master’s degree in Artificial Intelligence from the University of Turin also with highest honors. I then joined Politecnico di Milano for an industrial Ph.D. in Computer Science and Engineering supervised by Prof. Matteo Matteucci and in collaboration with Pirelli, successfully defending my thesis in April 2025.
I have also had a professional career, starting at Deloitte Italy Risk Advisory, where following a summer internship in 2015 I joined the team as a Data Analyst and IT Risk Management Consultant at the start of 2016. In early-2017 I moved to Agile Lab as a Data Science intern, and shortly thereafter took on a full-time role there as a Data Scientist and Machine Learning Engineer from October 2017 through October 2020.
My research centers on anomaly detection in industrial product images, where I have addressed highly complex scenarios characterized by big composite objects, subtle defects and varying production conditions. My interests also include adversarial attacks and defenses, neural architecture search, and zero/few-shot segmentation methods. My contributions include key publications at GECCO, ICPR and IJCNN, and I took part in the 2024 ICVSS class.
During my Ph.D., I served as a teaching assistant for courses in Machine Learning and Computer Science, and co-supervised several thesis in the field of Deep Learning.
